Don’t Ask, Don’t Care

On November 30th, the Pentagon delivered its report on the implications of a repeal of the military policy of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT). The report conducted a thorough survey of military personnel to gauge the sentiment of active duty soldiers. It also examined the historical examples of the integration of blacks and women into the military, as well as the integration of openly serving gays in the armed services of other countries and of civilian agencies in the Unites States.

In short, the report concluded that the repeal of DADT would not cause major disruptions to the military and that gay soldiers should be allowed to serve openly in the military.

Back in May, the House of Representatives added a provision to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to repeal DADT and passed the bill. The Senate added a similar provision to its version of the NDAA but has yet to vote on the bill. I suppose Harry Reid was waiting for the Pentagon’s report to come out before bringing a vote to the floor. (Either that or he was too busy not addressing 2011 tax rates and passing bills to crush small farmers.) It seems reasonable to wait for the report, but the question now is will the Senate have time to vote on the bill before the new Senate takes charge, which would presumably present problems for the DADT provision. Not if John McCain has his way. He has vowed to filibuster the bill.

T&A at the TSA

“They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” -Benjamin Franklin

First they confiscated our toenail clippers. Then they made us remove our shoes and throw out bottled water and toothpaste. Now the TSA is forcing Americans to choose between the full body “porno” scan, or having their junk groped. Finally, Americans are saying, “Enough!”

Ok. Maybe full body scans aren't all bad...

The TSA story is all over the news these days. The pundits have debated a whole range of questions pertaining to this issue. Are the naked scanners and aggressive frisking techniques an invasion of privacy? Do they violate the fourth amendment? Do the scanners even make us safer? Should the TSA be doing the screening or would a private entity do a better job? These are all reasonable and important questions; some of which I will discuss below.

But I think these questions are missing the big picture. What they fail to ask is, “Is our response to the terrorist threat, appropriate for the actual threat posed by terrorists?”

Happy Thanksgiving Y’all!

We all know the story of the first thanksgiving. The Pilgrims were dying off because they couldn’t grow enough food. Then the Indians came and taught them some tricks of the trade to help their crops. (The Indians might be second guessing that one?) With this newfound knowledge, the Pilgrims had a bountiful crop and shared a great feast with their Indian friends. And the Detroit Lions won in overtime.

Well, that’s part of the story. But there’s another part you may not have heard. When the Pilgrim colony was established, it was set up as a collective, where the men would pitch in to grow the crops and then all of the people would share the food evenly. No one was allowed to grow their own food. The effect was that no one wanted to do more than their fair share of the work to get their fair share of the food. This is known as the “tragedy of the commons.”

Last Weekend I Went to a Barn Raising.

Actually, it was a baby shower. It was a barn raising and a baby shower. Maybe I should clarify. Some friends of mine are building a small guesthouse/office in their backyard. They’re also building a family, with a three year old son and a new addition to arrive soon.

The husband, an architect, has been spending the majority of his free time coordinating the construction and doing much of the building himself. (The wife is also an architect but she’s got her own heavy lifting to do.) They have some left over baby clothes, toys and furniture. What they don’t have a lot of, is time.
